Flying high with Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) is the future motto for the Mittelhessen climbing centre.SWG is the new sponsoring partner of the centre in Giessen, and for the long term: the commitment will run for the next few years.

Climbing fun on more than 1500 square metres of space - that's what awaits young and old athletes alike at the Mittelhessen Climbing Centre. The centre in Rödgener Straße in Giessen opened its doors in July 2016 and has already delighted around 20,000 visitors since then. Climbers can learn new holds, scale walls and boulder on an area of over 14,000 square metres.
Sports programmes like this are close to the heart of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG). The company therefore supports numerous clubs and sports centres in the region. The Giessen Climbing Centre has been one of them since 1 January.
Ina Weller, company spokesperson for SWG, on the new partnership: "As a company with regional roots, we are very happy to be involved in the modern climbing centre here in Giessen. We are pleased that we can contribute to the variety of sporting activities on offer in the region. This offer from the local Alpine Club is indeed very impressive. It feels as if the mountains have been brought to Giessen."
The Mittelhessen climbing centre is run by the Giessen-Oberhessen section of the German Alpine Club (DAV). With around 3,000 members, it is the largest sports and nature conservation organisation in Giessen. Gunnar P. Theiß, 1st Chairman of the DAV, Giessen-Upper Hesse section: "Sponsoring partnerships such as the one with Stadtwerke Giessen are essential for maintaining and continuously developing our leisure programme. By joining forces, we are able to provide indoor and outdoor climbing areas for all ages and ability levels." But it wasn't just the climbing facilities that counted during construction - the association also placed great importance on nature conservation: a total of 16 nesting opportunities for birds were integrated into the outer façade and the facility was planted with trees and shrubs.

Long-term commitment
The signing of the sponsorship agreement marks the start of a long-term partnership: SWG would like to support the facility initially until 2022. In doing so, they are also supporting young adults - many of the members of the Mittelhessen climbing centre are students. Schools and nursery schools also benefit from the offer and thus the support of SWG. The Giessen-based centre is actively involved in school sports and the introduction of climbing clubs.
