Being able to access texts and write their own are key skills that children learn in the first years of their school education. It is therefore extremely helpful to introduce girls and boys to the written word at pre-school age and to awaken their interest in reading and writing. This is exactly where the "Newspaper in the nursery" project comes into play: from 4 February to 2 March, nurseries in the city and district of Giessen will receive the Giessener Anzeiger daily and free of charge. Its constantly new, longer and shorter articles, most of them with pictures, are ideal for a guided first contact. This is because such a newspaper offers educators plenty of opportunities to introduce their children to texts and the newspaper as a whole. They read out suitable articles, then talk about them and guide the little ones on a playful journey of discovery through the various pages.
Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) has always supported the campaign as a sponsor. "Part of this is that we want to encourage the children's creativity," summarises Antje Kärchner, who is responsible for supporting the project at SWG. This year, SWG provided 150 aprons, fabric paint and brushes. "The offer was really well received," says Antje Kärchner happily. As demand was around three times as high, the decision had to be made by drawing lots. In the end, children from eight daycare centre groups were able to design their own individual aprons. In this way, they received beautiful souvenirs of a successful event.
