Next Sunday, 23 June, the "Spiel' Dein Spiel" - City Day will once again take place at the Ringallee outdoor pool. As every year, many Giessen clubs present themselves with sporting activities and hands-on stations.

Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) invites you to "Spiel' Dein Spiel" - City Day at the Ringallee outdoor pool on Sunday, 23 June. The day of action starts at 11 am and offers sport and fun for young and old until 6 pm. Numerous clubs will be presenting some unusual and some familiar sports and allowing visitors to try them out without obligation. Admission is free and the outdoor pool is open as normal.

The City Day is an integral part of the "Spiel' Dein Spiel" campaign, which was launched and organised by SWG. The idea behind it is to get children and young people interested in sport and exercise. "With our campaign, we support clubs, schools and other organisations in the region that are committed to children's and youth sport," explains SWG company spokesperson Ulli Boos. This is done through donations of money and goods as well as through the "Spiel' Dein Spiel" - City Day itself. With this day of action, SWG is creating a platform on which clubs from Giessen and the surrounding area can present their programmes to a wide audience.

Discover new sports

Various clubs have confirmed their participation in the "Spiel' Dein Spiel" - City Day in June 2024. At the beginning, it is worth visiting the SWG-Treff, where information about the individual attractions of the day will be provided. Visitors can spin the wheel of fortune and win great prizes. One of the many sporting highlights will be organised by MTV 1846 Gießen. At their stand, interested visitors can try out a real summer trend: the so-called Roundnet. In this game, also known as spikeball, two teams of two players compete against each other. They spread out around a net close to the ground and try to play a ball onto the net as trickily as possible. If an opponent is unable to receive the ball or if a player misses the net with a shot, the other team scores a point. The Aqua Zumba programme at Giessen's swimming pools also gets sporty in the water. The aim here is to move to hot rhythms in the cool water. The DLRG will also be there: trained lifeguards will explain how to recognise drowning people and how to save them. Those interested can also find out more about diving and water rescue from the DRK water rescue organisation in Giessen.

Marksmanship required

Many sports are all about hitting a goal or a target to score a point. As part of the "Spiel' Dein Spiel" - City Day, visitors can get a taste of several such sports. At TSV 1889 Klein-Linden e.V., the European Championship fever is palpable: the girls impress with their football skills and prove that Germany's most popular sport is no longer just for men. At HSG Pohlheim and HSG Fernwald, too, the ball has to be kicked into the corner. Not with their feet, however, but with their hands. Because both clubs are all about handball. The Kegel-Sport-Vereinigung Wieseck has an unusual form of bowling up its sleeve: scissor bowling. The challenge here lies in the lane, as its concave shape is reminiscent of open scissors, i.e. it widens towards the back. The players therefore have to master a special throwing technique.

If you want to test your accuracy on much smaller targets, you can try your hand at the dartboard at the DC Cartoon Giessen stand. More precisely, at the so-called Steeldart. The difference: this variant of darts uses darts with a metal tip. The Giessen Golden Dragons from MTV 1846 Giessen will also be back. The club will be presenting American football.

Michael Rogalla, alias Clown Ichmael, will also be back with his circus barn. Here, young people can make their first attempts at balancing and juggling. And in the middle of it all, visitors are sure to run into the SWG mascot Fabius. The funny dragon will of course also be performing a trick or two. So it's worth keeping an eye on him.
