From 25 July, Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) will be replacing the defective district heating pipe in Rathenaustraße and Ferniestraße. The construction work will be carried out in two stages. SWG is setting up appropriate diversions for both phases.

"A quick repair of the district heating pipe in Ferniestrasse and Rathenaustraße was unfortunately not enough to secure the supply in the long term," explains Frank Oßwald from Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG). The need for comprehensive renovation became apparent when SWG tried to repair a sudden defect in winter. "We were initially only able to solve the problem provisionally. This was because the upcoming modernisation required the pipe to be shut down for the entire duration of the work. Of course, this was not possible during the heating period."
There is also another major challenge to overcome: Rathenaustraße, Ferniestraße and Schiffenberger Weg - one of the most frequently used routes into Giessen city centre - have to be completely or partially closed by SWG. The renovation of the district heating pipeline was therefore scheduled for a period with as little traffic as possible - the summer and semester holidays.

Modernisation in two stages
During the first construction phase, SWG will first lay new pipes under Rathenaustraße. The carriageway will therefore be closed to traffic from 25 July until probably 8 August. Diversions will be signposted. Start date for the second construction phase: 11 August. From this date, Schiffenberger Weg and Ferniestraße will be partially closed until probably 15 September. Residents should also note that they may not be able to reach their property by car during these two periods. There may also be interruptions to the supply, which Stadtwerke Giessen will inform residents of at short notice by letter.
