Natural gas vehicles are still on the rise. This trend is also gaining ground in the district of Giessen: The number of registered vehicles is steadily increasing. The environmental consultants and energy officers from the district of Giessen are not immune to this trend and accepted the invitation from Stadtwerke Giessen AG (SWG) to the municipal environmental meeting. The topic of the environmental meeting was "Mobile with natural gas". As host of the event, Michael Rösner, Head of Private Customer Sales at SWG, welcomed 18 participants from towns and municipalities in the district.
Mobile with natural gas
Those who followed the presentations by Peter Postus, technical customer advisor at E.on Ruhrgas AG, quickly realised that natural gas vehicles are a real alternative to petrol and diesel vehicles: Natural gas is unrivalled in price and protects the environment. In addition to the price advantage and the environmental aspect, the presentation focussed on the economic efficiency of the vehicles and the range of different vehicle types. Particular interest was shown in the explanations on vehicle technology and safety. The expansion of the petrol station network in Germany was also a topic on this day.
Buying a natural gas vehicle
In the second part of the presentation, the environmental consultants and energy officers listened to Herrmann Blümel from Büro für zukunftsfähige Mobilitätskonzeptionen. The speaker presented the criteria for a sustainable car purchase. Herrmann Blümel analysed follow-up costs and cost risks without ignoring the current legal situation. He also made it clear to the participants that EU air quality directives as well as noise and exhaust emission directives for cars and commercial vehicles are increasingly becoming municipal issues.
Refuelling with natural gas - safely and quickly
After the theoretical part of the day, the participants of the Municipal Environmental Meeting were able to see for themselves how safely and quickly a natural gas car can be refuelled. The participants visited the Stadtwerke's natural gas filling station on its premises and were also able to take a look at the filling station's technology. The municipal utilities operate a public natural gas filling station at the ARAL petrol station in Marburger Straße 229 in Giessen.
