Modern funeral customs

As in previous years, on the nationwide ‘Cemetery Day’, the Giessen Crematorium offers a glimpse behind the scenes.

Empathy for the bereaved and the respect required to ensure a dignified farewell to a loved one – these two core values characterise the work carried out at the Giessen Crematorium. To demonstrate transparently how staff carry out their various duties, Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) is hosting an open day at the crematorium on 20 September 2026. Once again this year, this informative event is taking place as part of the nationwide ‘Cemetery Day’. Between 12 noon and 4 pm, anyone interested can take part in guided tours of the new and old crematoria. “In recent years, we have noticed that more and more people are taking an interest in this subject,” explains Ulrich Jochim, manager of the crematorium. He and his colleagues will guide visitors through the crematorium and its associated facilities – such as the farewell room. Along the way, they will explain the background, answer questions and, of course, discuss the Giessen crematorium’s 100th anniversary. All guided tours – in both the new and the old crematorium – are, of course, free of charge.
