Vocational students from the Max-Eyth-Schule in Alsfeld explored the gas and water supply of Stadtwerke Gießen AG (SWG) together with their class teacher, Mr Hummel. Ten pupils accepted SWG's invitation to an information event organised by the Giessen-based energy and water supplier.
Training at first hand
The vocational students at Max-Eyth-Schule are learning the profession of plant mechanic specialising in sanitary, heating and air conditioning technology. The class, which is in its second year of training, used the visit to gain an insight into energy and water supply. The SWG tour took the school class to the gas supply facilities. The pupils learnt from Hans Jürgen Dühring, foreman in the gas systems department at SWG, what tasks a natural gas transfer station has and what the natural gas spherical tank is used for. This year, the municipal utilities are celebrating 150 years of gas in Giessen and can look back on a rapid development. Nowadays, gas has evolved from a pure source of light to an energy source that most households can no longer imagine living without. Following the findings in gas supply, water supply took centre stage. The Max Eyth students visited a medium-zone tank together with Norbert Pausner, Deputy Head of Gas and Water Plant Engineering. After a brief refreshment at the waterworks in Queckborn, Michael Rösner, Head of Private Customer Sales at SWG, provided information about the Giessen-based energy and water supplier. In the theoretical part, the students learnt from graduate engineer Peter Keller, Head of Gas and Water Systems Engineering, about the origins of natural gas through to its distribution. Peter Keller then went on to provide background information on Giessen's water supply. Before the information event ended with a discussion round, Mr Pausner took the prospective plant mechanics on a tour of the waterworks in Queckborn and explained the technical innovations.
Tours for school classes
Vocational schools interested in the background to energy and water supply should contact Stadtwerke Gießen: SWG will put together an individual programme for school classes. Further information or an appointment for a tour can be arranged by calling 0180 22 11 100.
