How the buses run on Shrove Tuesday
Due to the popular carnival parade, most bus routes will not be able to pass through Giessen city centre as usual on Sunday, 15 February. MIT.BUS has therefore set up diversions.
As the highlight of the 2026 carnival session, the traditional parade is once again expected to attract thousands of fools to Giessen city centre. On Sunday, 15 February at 1.33 pm, the floats, guards and music corps will make their way through the city centre on Ringallee. As every year, the organisers secure the route a few hours earlier. This has a massive impact on bus services. This is because numerous roads in the city centre will be closed between 10 am and 6 pm. "As on every Shrove Sunday, we ask our passengers for their understanding for the expected delays," explains Ulli Boos, company spokesperson for Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG).
The train route and the consequences
The procession will follow the same route that proved successful last year: from Ringallee via Wiesenstraße, Platz der Deutschen Einheit, Ostanlage, Südanlage, Westanlage, Reichensand, Bahnhofstraße, Marktstraße and Marktplatz to Kirchenplatz. As a result, the city buses will not be able to stop at "Marktplatz", "City Center", "Katharinengasse", "Oswaldsgarten", "Johanneskirche", "Selterstor", "Behördenzentrum", "Berliner Platz", "Landgericht", "Liebigstraße", "Nahrungsberg" and "Wolfstraße". A total of eight lines are affected by this and are being rerouted accordingly.
Line 1
Buses will run from Lützellinden via Allendorf and Kleinlinden to the "Friedrichstraße" stop and on to the "Bahnhof" stop. From Rödgen, the buses will initially run as usual from the "Bürgerhaus" stop to the "Volkshalle" stop. From there, line 2 continues via the "Lutherberg" stop to the "Eichendorffring" stop and back.
Line 2
All journeys between the "Bahnhof" and "Nahrungsberg" stops must be cancelled. From the "Eichendorffring" stop, the line will initially run as usual to the "Lutherberg" stop. From there it will continue as line 1 via the "Volkshalle" stop to Rödgen to the "Bürgerhaus" stop and back.
Lines 3 and 13
Both lines commute between the stops "Neuer Friedhof" and "Schwarzacker/Schlangenzahl". Between the "Neuer Friedhof" and "Nordanlage" stops, they use the usual route. From the "Nordanlage" stop, the buses will travel via the "Mühlstraße", "Bahnhof" and "Friedrichstraße" stops to the "Petruskirche" stop. They will then follow the usual route again to the final stops "Schwarzacker" and "Schlangenzahl". Due to the existing full closure of Ludwigstraße, lines 3 and 13 will continue to run on the diversions route after 6 pm.
Lines 5 and 15
The journeys run from the "Steinstraße" stop in Marburger Straße via Nordanlage to the "Mühlstraße" stop and via Westanlage and Bahnhofstraße to the "Bahnhof" stop. For the return journeys, the buses follow the route in the opposite direction.
Line 7
The line commutes between the stops "Ev. Krankenhaus" and "Bahnhof" and serves the stop "Mühlstraße" in the Westanlage. There are no buses on line 7 between the "Philosophenwald" and "Oswaldsgarten" stops.
Line 14
Line 14 will run from the "Dialysezentrum" from the "Ulner Dreieck" stop via Schiffenberger Weg to the "Philosophikum".
Lines 801 and 802
The lines run between the stops in Wettenberg and Weststadt to the "Bahnhof" stop and back. They also serve the "Mühlstraße" stop in the Westanlage. The journeys via Schiffenberger Weg to the Philosophikum will be taken over by line 14. Journeys to Schiffenberg are cancelled.
Use the favourable group day ticket
Despite all these restrictions, public transport is the ideal way to get to and from the move stress-free. And at particularly favourable conditions: With the group day ticket, up to five people can travel for 10.40 euros within city price level 1 in fare zone 1501. This means that the ticket is already worthwhile if two adults are travelling there and back together.
