German households consume the most energy during the cold season. No wonder, because at low temperatures the heating provides cosy warmth within your own four walls. If you want to reduce your energy costs in winter, you can often achieve this with simple means - without sacrificing the comfort you are used to. Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) provided information on how this works on Thursday 29 September at a presentation in the SWG customer centre on the market square in Gießen.
SWG energy consultant Martin Lorenz revealed: "Just paying attention to the optimum temperature in the rooms of your home can save a lot of money. In the living room, for example, 20 to 22 degrees is enough to feel comfortable. In the bedroom and kitchen, however, it's 15 to 18 degrees." Every additional degree of warmth increases energy costs by around six per cent.
Martin Lorenz also explained that the way in which the home is ventilated also determines consumption: "Permanently tilted windows only allow a small amount of air exchange. It is better to open the windows fully for a few minutes several times a day to replace the stale, humid air with fresh air. This promotes a comfortable living climate and prevents mould growth." How long you ventilate depends on the outside temperature. The colder, the shorter. It is also important to turn off the heating in the room while the window is open.
"With events like today's, we help our customers to save energy with simple means in a personal dialogue," explained Michael Rösner, Head of Sales Private & Commercial Customers at Stadtwerke Gießen. He also emphasised: "Whatever questions people here have about saving energy, they can contact our experts at the SWG customer centre directly at any time."
SWG's energy advisors are available Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by telephone on 0800 2302100 or on site at the SWG customer centre on Marktplatz. Information is also available around the clock on the SWG website www.energiessen.de.
