Once again, Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) has to warn its customers about suspected fraudsters. The scam they are using this time is not new: they call unsolicited, involve their potential victims in a conversation and try to obtain the number of the electricity meter. To add emphasis, they claim to be acting on behalf of SWG.
The whole thing serves only one purpose: anyone who knows the meter number can cancel the existing electricity supply contract and present the victim with a new one from another provider. And this provider usually offers worse conditions. The unsolicited callers currently send the Hamburg dialling code 040.
Simply end the call
SWG company spokesperson Ulli Boos advises those affected to proceed as follows in such a situation: "Never give out personal details or your meter number over the phone. Don't get involved in a discussion, it's best to simply hang up."
SWG relies on outside help to protect its customers from trouble and to warn them as quickly as possible if dubious businessmen are up to mischief again. In this case too, concerned customers came forward to describe their experiences. "We are very grateful for this," adds Ulli Boos. There are various ways to report such calls or even dishonest door-to-door sales: By phone on 0800 2302100 (free of charge from all German networks), by WhatsApp on 0151 15213066 or by email to info@stadtwerke-giessen.de
