Clean drinking water is a natural part of our everyday lives. At the Fabius holiday play event organised by Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) at the Queckborn waterworks, children learned first-hand what has to happen before the cool water can flow from the tap. The educational excursion has been an integral part of the holiday play programme in the district of Giessen for years. Once again, around 500 girls and boys from 17 municipalities in the district spent an exciting morning learning where the number one foodstuff comes from and how it reaches our households.
Learning through play
During the appointments at the Queckborn waterworks, the children first watched a film explaining why clean drinking water is so important for people and the effort involved in ensuring that it always comes fresh from the tap. After a little refreshment with sandwiches and fruit, things got sporty: several disciplines were on the programme in a water Olympics. For example, the pupils learnt through play how to prevent water pollution. They then had to overcome an obstacle course with a filled water container - without spilling too much of the valuable cargo.
As a small final gift, each child received a ticket for the Ringallee swimming centre.
