Due to a complete closure of Alter Steinbacher Weg, SWG is running buses on routes 18 and 801 via an alternative route.
In Alter Steinbacher Weg, a fundamental renovation is due to be carried out at the Ostschule. The work extends to the section between Danziger Straße and Schlesische Straße and requires a full road closure. As a result, Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) will have to reroute buses on lines 18 and 801 from Wednesday 29 January. As things stand today, the construction work will continue until spring 2026.
The detours in detail
Line 18 runs from the "Berliner Platz" stop via Ludwigstraße, Bismarckstraße, Schiffenberger Weg and Rathenaustraße directly to the "Philosophikum" stop. For the return journey, it follows the regular route. Line 801 takes the same route from the "Berliner Platz" stop via Ludwigstraße, Bismarckstraße, Schiffenberger Weg and Rathenaustraße, before travelling to the new replacement stop "Ostschule" in Alter Steinbacher Weg. The return journey follows the same route. Important to know: The replacement stop "Ostschule" is located in a newly created turning loop near Karl-Reuter-Weg. The additional school buses will also take the diversion route to the "Ostschule" replacement stop.
Due to the diversion of route 801, the "Nahrungsberg" and "Pistorstraße" stops will have to be cancelled. Instead, the buses in both directions will stop at "Sandkauter Weg", "Siemensstraße", "Philosophikum" and "Ostschule Ersatzhaltestelle". Line 801 will not serve the stops "Liebigschule", "Sternmark", "Am Unteren Rain" and "Klingelbachweg" due to time constraints. Passengers travelling to Pistorstraße are requested to use the "Sandkauter Weg" stop.
At the "Philosophikum" stop, both lines will depart from different bus platforms than usual. SWG has signposted the exact location on site.
Three alternatives
If you live in the Ostpreußenviertel neighbourhood, the "Graudenzer Straße" and "Friedensstraße" bus stops are just a few minutes' walk away. Line 2 and the regional bus line GI-22 stop here and take passengers to the city centre. For journeys to and from Giessen railway station, the RB 45 of the Hessische Landesbahn is a real alternative. The trains make a stopover at the "Licher Straße" station.
