The 2023 season at the Kleinlinden and Lützellinden outdoor pools ends on 3 September. A total of around 21,000 bathers came.

On Sunday, 3 September 2023, the district outdoor pools in Kleinlinden and Lützellinden will go into hibernation. Around 21,000 visitors took advantage of the 91 opening days to refresh themselves or simply have a good time. "This puts us just below the average of the past 20 years," says Uwe Volbrecht, Head of Giessen's swimming pools, summing up the mixed summer of 2023. As usual in recent times, Giessen's swimming pools extended their opening hours by one hour during the summer holidays.

Always something going on

Like most other facilities of this type, the Kleinlinden and Lützellinden outdoor pools also attract mainly private individuals to the sunbathing lawns and pools. We work very well with the local clubs," says Uwe Volbrecht, referring to two successful events: The traditional mini triathlon took place again this year at the Kleinlinden outdoor pool. And the Giessen swimming club used the infrastructure of the Lützellinden outdoor pool for its anniversary marquee.

Lots of electricity saved

In addition to plenty of water, a comparatively large amount of electricity is needed to operate an outdoor pool - for example for the powerful pumps. They are needed to constantly circulate the pool water and feed it into the treatment system. "In 2021, we replaced the old pumps in both pools with highly efficient models," explains Uwe Volbrecht. They were a success: the new pumps saved electricity in the very first season - one in which there weren't really many bathers. This year's season saw an impressive 21,000 kilowatt hours saved. That is roughly equivalent to the consumption of seven average households.

Fit for next year

If everything runs normally, the outdoor pools in Kleinlinden and Lützellinden will open their doors again in around nine months. But until then, a lot will happen here again. In fact, the Giessen pools are using the autumn to carry out upcoming repairs and modernisations. In spring, Uwe Volbrecht's employees will then bring the pools out of hibernation and get the technology ready for the upcoming twelve to fifteen weeks of summer - depending on the weather.
