District heating for Gnauthstraße
SWG is expanding the district heating network in the south of Giessen.
More and more people in Giessen would like to heat their homes with district heating in the future. Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) is happy to fulfil this wish and is therefore opening up various streets with the corresponding pipes - for example Gnauthstraße. The necessary construction work will start here on Monday, 14 April 2025. Of course, this is not just about laying the necessary, well-insulated pipes. SWG is also equipping 14 residential buildings with a house connection for environmentally friendly district heating.
As few restrictions as possible
Because district heating pipes run underground, laying them inevitably involves relatively high costs. Not only for Stadtwerke Gießen, but of course also for the residents who live in the affected streets. "To minimise the restrictions as much as possible, we always divide such long stretches into different construction phases," explains Peter Keller, Head of the Energy & Water Networks department at SWG. In fact, SWG has to excavate around 400 metres of trench in Gnauthstraße for the laying work. As a result, Gnauthstraße will have to be fully closed to traffic between Goethestraße and Lessingstraße from 14 April. Once the work here has been completed, the section between Lessingstrasse and Stephanstrasse will follow. This section of Gnauthstraße will also be fully closed to traffic. Appropriate diversions will be signposted. Important to know: There will be no parking facilities in the respective sections for the duration of the closure.
If everything goes according to plan, SWG will complete the project at the end of October - just in time for the start of the next heating period. SWG asks all residents for their understanding for the necessary measures.
