District heating expansion in the east of Giessen

SWG is opening up the Alter Steinbacher Weg with district heating.

At the beginning of next week, Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) will start work on expanding the district heating network in Alter Steinbacher Weg between Karl-Reuter-Weg and the roundabout. SWG is laying around 350 metres of new pipes here, through which environmentally friendly district heating will reach customers in future. At the same time, SWG is renewing the existing water pipe.

Construction work of this kind brings with it certain unavoidable inconveniences. In fact, the Alte Steinbacher Weg will initially have to be completely closed to traffic between the access road to the construction site operated by Landesbetrieb Bau und Immobilien Hessen and the roundabout. As usual, residents will still be able to reach their properties by car. The same applies to the kindergarten. SWG will of course ensure that lorries can access the two large construction sites at the Ostschule and the Landesbetrieb Bau und Immobilien Hessen as well as the Justus Liebig University at all times. The two "Ostschule" bus stops will also remain in operation. The footpath between the roundabout and Graudenzer Straße, which is separated from the carriageway by a grass verge, is also available without restriction. Road users are advised to take a wide detour around the construction site.

From 30 March 2026, SWG will also begin renewing ageing electricity and gas pipes in addition to the district heating pipes. However, this will only affect the parallel section of Alter Steinbacher Weg between Bromberger Straße and Graudenzer Straße. Unfortunately, the car parks will also be removed in this area. The entire construction project is scheduled for completion in mid-December 2026.

Diversion for bus routes 12 and 18
The full closure of Alter Steinbacher Weg will necessitate the diversion of two bus routes: Line 12 cannot travel to the "Philosophikum", "Siemensstraße" and "Pistorstraße" stops. It starts and ends at the "Ostschule" stop. Passengers travelling to and from "Pistorstraße" are requested to use the "Sandkauter Weg" stop with lines 801 and 802. Buses on route 18 will run in the direction of "Philosophikum" from the "Berliner Platz" stop via Ludwigstraße, Bismarckstraße, Schiffenberger Weg and Rathenaustraße directly to the "Philosophikum" terminus. In the opposite direction, route 18 will follow the regular route.

All information on current diversions and the associated timetable changes can be obtained by calling 0641 708-1400, on the Internet at www.stadtwerke-giessen.de/verkehrshinweise or at the RMV mobility centre in Giessen in the SWG customer centre on Marktplatz. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9 am to 6 pm. SWG can also be contacted by e-mail: mobizentrale@stadtwerke-giessen.de
