District heating expansion continues

SWG is connecting two streets in Schiffenberger Tal with district heating and renovating the supply lines for electricity, natural gas and water at the same time.

In order to enable more and more people to use climate-friendly district heating, Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) is consistently pushing ahead with the expansion of the corresponding network in 2026. Specifically, work will continue in the north-western section of Talstraße and in the street Am Unteren Rain. The construction work is divided into two sections, begins on 2 March and is expected to continue until the 50th calendar week, i.e. until mid-December 2026. During this time, however, SWG will not only be laying the new district heating pipes. "At the same time, our colleagues are renovating the electricity cables and the pipes for natural gas and drinking water. This will reduce the inconvenience for local residents and also save money," explains Ulli Boos, company spokesperson for SWG.

Who is affected?
The first construction phase extends in Talstrasse from house number 2 to house number 8. Because the pipes are located under the pavement and under the carriageway, the road must be fully closed to traffic. The pavement on the side with the odd-numbered houses remains passable. However, there will be no parking spaces available between Am Unteren Rain and Klingelbachweg for the duration of the closure.

In principle, the properties can be reached by car. "At times, however, access may not be possible. For example, when an excavator opens or closes the pipe trench in the affected area," continues Ulli Boos, adding: "We are doing everything we can to minimise the restrictions for residents and for students and teaching staff at the two universities." SWG will provide information in good time when the second construction phase starts.
