The average household consumes most of its energy when heating. If you want to reduce your costs, you can achieve a lot with simple measures without sacrificing the comfort you are used to. Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) regularly holds events at its customer centre on energy saving and energy efficiency. At the beginning of October, the focus was on heating and ventilation.
"You can achieve noticeable savings just by setting the right room temperature," explains Martin Lorenz, energy consultant at Stadtwerke Gießen. In the living room, for example, 20 to 22 degrees is enough to make you feel comfortable, in the bedroom and kitchen it is 15 to 18 degrees. Every additional degree of warmth increases energy costs by around six per cent. Correct ventilation is also crucial. "Permanently tilted windows do not lead to the desired air exchange," emphasises Martin Lorenz. Instead, windows should be opened fully for a few minutes several times a day to replace the stale, humid air with fresh air. The duration of ventilation depends on the outside temperature: the colder it is, the faster the air exchange takes place. "This ensures a comfortable indoor climate and prevents mould growth," explains the energy consultant. It's important to switch off the heating in the room during this process.
"Many customers use our energy consultations to obtain comprehensive information," says Michael Rösner, Head of Sales Private & Commercial Customers at Stadtwerke Gießen. "This time, too, there was lively discussion in the group after the presentation and we were able to give many individual tips in one-to-one discussions."
SWG's energy consultants are available to answer questions on the subject of energy saving from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by telephone on 0641 708-1453 or on site at the SWG customer centre on Marktplatz.
