Heating costs are becoming an ever-increasing cost factor - but if you take a closer look, this is also where the greatest savings potential can be realised. In order to achieve savings in the area of energy supply, the Evangelical Hospital Mittelhessen (EKM) relied on the energy management of Stadtwerke Gießen AG (SWG).
The result shows that the collaboration was worthwhile: the municipal utilities managed to reduce the hospital's annual heating requirements by 60 percent thanks to the optimised systems. Steffen Bepler (Technical Director of the EKM) was more than satisfied with this result. "With the concept, Stadtwerke guaranteed us a reduction in energy consumption - the result achieved far exceeded our savings targets," explained Steffen Bepler.
Modernised system
Matthias Fink (project manager and district heating supply employee) coordinated the modernisation together with Steffen Bepler. The optimised systems now consist of two hot water boilers for the peak load and a combined heat and power unit (CHP) for the building's base load. The boiler mainly used operates on the basis of efficient condensing technology. "We achieved a large part of the record-breaking energy savings at the Protestant hospital not through improved systems alone, but through their finely tuned interaction," explained Matthias Fink.
The dimensions of the CHP unit are a perfect match for the increased heating requirements of the extensive heating network in the hospital's extensive building complex.
The ventilation system with heat recovery improved by SWG plays a central role in heating the hospital. Even at outside temperatures of a few degrees Celsius, it is able to keep the building at the right temperature. Conventional boilers only come into play at temperatures of less than three degrees Celsius.
For businesses and companies, as well as towns and municipalities, the following applies: anyone wishing to optimise their heating system should contact the experts at Stadtwerke Gießen AG. SWG employees will take a close look at your heating system and can quickly tell you which technical and economic options are available for optimising the system. The service hotline is available Monday to Friday from 7 am to 7 pm.
