Construction work on Gnauthstraße continues with a delay
There have been delays in the district heating development work in Gnauthstraße. Nevertheless, the district heating supply is due to start this year.
Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) has been developing Gnauthstraße with district heating pipes since mid-April. 14 of the 22 residential buildings in this street will receive a corresponding house connection. The first construction phase between Goethestrasse and Lessingstrasse has now been completed. Over the next few days, work will continue between Lessingstrasse and Stephanstrasse. "Unfortunately, there were unavoidable delays during the construction work. We ask the residents affected for their understanding," explains Ulli Boos, company spokesperson for SWG.
Various factors
Like practically all supply lines, the new pipes for district heating also run underground. As a result, SWG will have to dig a trench. In doing so, the experts inevitably also uncover water pipes. These revealed various age-related weak points. "It would be negligent not to rectify these obvious problems at the same time," adds Ulli Boos. In fact, SWG also replaced some of the water service connections as part of the district heating installation.
However, the additional work involved is not the only factor that has delayed the schedule. This is because in order to be able to put the new house connections into operation, tradesmen are needed who are not always available at short notice.
This is how it continues
Naturally, those responsible at SWG have reacted to the new situation and adjusted their schedule. All district heating pipes up to house number 2 are to be laid by the end of this year. Until then, Gnauthstraße between Lessingstraße and Stephanstraße must remain fully closed. A diversion will of course be set up and signposted.
The new district heating pipeline will not be connected to the network at the junction with Stephanstraße until the beginning of 2026, but this will not affect the start of the heat supply. This is because SWG has already connected the section of pipeline that has already been laid to the network in Goethestrasse. This means that district heating is available in the area of the first construction phase. "We are doing everything in our power to avoid further delays and minimise the restrictions as much as possible," promises Ulli Boos.
