From 16 to 18 August, Giessen's city centre will once again be transformed into a party mile. Numerous bands, artists and events such as the Dragon Boat Cup will attract tens of thousands of people from all over the region on the city festival weekend - and many of the visitors will stay until late into the evening on Friday and Saturday. "If you want to dance and party until the stages close, you can get home safely on public transport afterwards. We have made provisions for this," promises Anne Müller-Kreutz, Head of Local Transport Services at Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG). There will be a special timetable for several SWG lines from the Marktplatz stop after 11.30 pm. Buses on line 1 to Lützellinden and Rödgen, line 2 to Eichendorffring, line 3 to Friedhof and Wartweg, line 5 to Wieseck and line 7 to Philosophenwald will depart from there until around 01:00 in the morning. Line 801 runs to Weststadt and Rathenaustraße. Line 24 runs to Heuchelheim-Kinzenbach. A scheduled taxi also takes passengers to Petersweiher and to the Sandfeld stop as well as in the direction of Evangelisches Krankenhaus.
Home by night bus
As usual, the free "Venus" and "Saturn" city buses also run on Friday and Saturday nights and from Saturday to Sunday between 00:30 and 04:30. The Venus line stops at the railway station/Mathematikum and runs between the north and west of the city, including Wieseck. The Saturn night bus route travels to the south and east of Giessen as well as to Kleinlinden. The night buses depart every hour from the Berliner Platz stop. Passengers can reach the districts of Rödgen, Allendorf and Lützellinden by connecting taxi.
Many visitors also flock to the city centre during the day. "The search for a parking space is certainly more difficult than on a normal weekend," explains Anne Müller-Kreutz. She therefore advises visitors to switch to public transport at lunchtime. For anyone travelling to Giessen with friends and relatives, the head of SWG's local transport services recommends a group day ticket for up to five adults. The price of the ticket is 6.30 euros.
Change of plan on Sunday
For Sunday afternoon, there will be a change of route for some lines. This is because some roads will be temporarily closed due to the "Run'n'Roll for Help" city run. Line 5 in the direction of the railway station and line 12 to Berliner Platz will run on an alternative route from midday until around 20:00. Line 5 will run in the direction of Bahnhof/Mathematikum from the Landgericht stop via Moltkestraße and Grünberger Straße to Berliner Platz. Instead of the Behördenzentrum stop, it will stop at Berliner Platz. Line 12 runs from the Steinstraße stop via Nordanlage and Marktplatz to Berliner Platz. The Landgericht stop is cancelled. Buses on lines 5 and 12 travelling in the direction of Wieseck or Sandfeldschule will not be rerouted.
