Next Sunday, 19 February, the traditional carnival parade will once again attract thousands from Giessen and the surrounding area to the streets along the route through the city centre. During the carnival celebrations, there will probably be considerable disruptions to city bus services between 1.30 pm and 5.30 pm. Buses will not be travelling to the Marktplatz stop, among others. In addition, individual connections to the city centre will be completely interrupted at times due to the carnival procession.
As many visitors will be streaming into the city centre before the start of the parade, SWG subsidiary MIT.BUS will be using spacious articulated buses on routes 1, 2 and 5 on Sunday. Anne Müller-Kreutz, Head of Local Transport Services at Stadtwerke, explains how SWG is taking additional precautions: "We are keeping three more buses in reserve for the busy routes from 3.00 pm, which we can deploy immediately if necessary."
Diversions and changes in the afternoon
The interruptions, changes and diversions will affect almost all city bus routes between 13:30 and around 16:00:
Line 1 will run from Lützellinden via Allendorf and Kleinlinden to the railway station stop. From Rödgen, buses will only run as far as the Waldstadion stop.
Line 3 runs from the Schwarzacker stop to Schiffenberger Weg and from the Friedhof stop via Ostanlage to Berliner Platz.
Line 5 runs from Wieseck via Nordanlage, Westanlage and Bahnhofstraße to the railway station.
Lines 801 and 802 from Wettenberg run via Weststadt, Nordanlage and Ostanlage to the Berliner Platz stop.
Line 12 runs from the Sandfeldschule stop via Ostanlage to the Berliner Platz stop.
Line 24 from Wetzlar via Lahnau and Heuchelheim runs via Westanlage, Lahnstraße and Frankfurter Straße to the railway station.
Line 11 runs from Wetzlar via Dutenhofen, Allendorf, Lützellinden and Kleinlinden to the railway station.
"Unfortunately, we will have to completely suspend services on lines 2, 6 and 7 between around 13:30 and 16:00," explains Anne Müller-Kreutz.
Due to the clean-up work after the end of the carnival procession, the city buses will not stop at the Marktplatz stop until around 17:30. Passengers on lines 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 12, 801, 802 and line 11 of Wetzlarer Verkehrsbetriebe can get on at the Berliner Platz stop until then, passengers on line 5 can get off at the Behördenzentrum stop and passengers on line 24 of ESE Verkehrsgesellschaft can get off at the Mühlstraße and Schützenstraße stops.
Save with a group day ticket
If you are travelling in a group on Sunday in the city bus area, you can use a day ticket for up to five people. It costs 6.20 euros, a single journey for adults costs 1.70 euros and the day ticket for adults is available for 3.30 euros.
Passengers can also obtain information on prices, all changes and diversions by calling the SWG service number 0641 708-1400 or at the mobility centre in Schulstraße 7. Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 18:00 and Saturdays from 09:00 to 14:00.
