Due to the carnival parade, Giessen city centre will be partially closed on Sunday, 2 March. Stadtwerke Giessen has set up diversions for the affected bus routes. Delays and cancellations are to be expected.
Giessen. As the highlight of the 2025 carnival session, fools and jesters will once again parade through the streets of Giessen on Sunday, 2 March. The traditional parade starts at 1.33 pm in Ringallee and is expected to attract thousands of people again this year with its themed floats, guards and music corps. In order to ensure an orderly procession, the organisers will secure the route a few hours earlier. As a result, there will be closures in the city centre between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., which will have a massive impact on bus traffic. "As usual on Shrove Tuesday, we expect delays and ask our passengers for their understanding," explains Ulli Boos, company spokesperson for Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG).
The route of the procession and the consequences
This year, the procession will take a new route: from Ringallee via Wiesenstraße, Platz der Deutschen Einheit, Ostanlage, Südanlage, Westanlage, Reichensand, Bahnhofstraße and Marktstraße to Marktplatz. This means that the stops "Marktplatz", "City Center", "Katharinengasse", "Oswaldsgarten", "Stadttheater", "Johanneskirche", "Selterstor", "Behördenzentrum", "Berliner Platz", "Landgericht", "Liebigstraße", "Nahrungsberg" and "Wolfstraße" cannot be served during this time. As a result, SWG has set up diversions for eight of the affected bus routes. Two lines will not run at all on this day.
Line 1
Buses will run from Lützellinden via Allendorf and Kleinlinden to the "Friedrichstraße" stop and on to the "Bahnhof" stop. From Rödgen, the buses will initially run as usual from the "Bürgerhaus" stop to the "Volkshalle" stop. From there, the route continues via the "Lutherberg" stop to the "Eichendorffring" stop and back. In this section, line 1 therefore takes over the route of line 2.
Line 2
The journeys between the "Bahnhof" and "Nahrungsberg" stops will be cancelled. From the "Eichendorffring" stop, the line will initially run as usual to the "Lutherberg" stop. From there, it will continue via the "Volkshalle" stop to Rödgen to the "Bürgerhaus" stop and back, thus taking up the route of Line 1 in this section.
Line 3
Line 3 commutes between the stops "Friedhof" and "Georg-Haas-Straße". Between the "Friedhof" and "Nordanlage" stops, it uses the usual route. From the "Nordanlage" stop, the buses will travel via the "Mühlstraße", "Bahnhof" and "Friedrichstraße" stops to the "Röntgenstraße Ersatz" stop, after which they will follow the usual route to the "Georg-Haas-Straße" terminus. The stops "Ebelstraße", "Welckerstraße" and "Ulner Dreieck" cannot be served.
Lines 5/15
The journeys will run from the "Steinstraße" stop in Marburger Straße via Nordanlage and Westanlage to the "Bahnhof" stop. The stops "Nordanlage" in Nordanlage and "Mühlstraße" in Westanlage will be served. For the return journeys, buses will follow the route in the opposite direction.
Line 6
Line 6 will not run on 2 March.
Line 7
The line shuttles between the stops "Ev. Krankenhaus" and "Bahnhof" and serves the stop "Mühlstraße" in the Westanlage. There will be no buses on line 7 between the "Philosophenwald" stop and the city centre.
Line 12
The buses on route 12 will also remain in the depot on Shrove Sunday. The scheduled taxi journeys in the daytime off-peak areas are available as usual.
Line 801 and 802
The lines run between the stops in Wettenberg and Weststadt to the "Bahnhof" stop and back. They also serve the "Mühlstraße" stop in the Westanlage.
Use the favourable group day ticket
SWG has a money-saving tip for all those who want to join in the carnival celebrations on Sunday and want to travel stress-free by public transport: if you are travelling to Giessen with up to five people on the city bus, you can travel cheaper with the group day ticket. It costs 9.90 euros for the city journey - and is therefore worthwhile for two adults travelling there and back together.
