For the primary school pupils in Homberg/Ohm, it's time to take off their shoes, get out of their socks and feel! With the help of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG), the primary school's support association has created a barefoot path in the school playground. Astrid Weixler from the Marketing & Sales department at SWG suggested the support as one of the 75 good deeds. After all, she herself has been a member of the association for a long time and her niece Saskia is in first grade at the primary school. "The school playground urgently needs to be spruced up and an attraction like the barefoot path is missing anyway," says the SWG sponsor. "Because the heating broke down, a construction company had to dig up almost the entire playground to fix the fault."
SWG's good deed came at just the right time. In a working group, pupils from years one to three, together with Nicole Grün, responsible for school-related youth social work in the Vogelsberg district, collected ideas for the redesign of the playground. In the end, the barefoot path won the race - after all, it is particularly suitable for training children's sensory perception and coordination skills. Members of the support association and pupils from the working group began the initial work back in May: They prepared the ground in front of the assembly hall so that it could be excavated and then laid floor slabs on a layer of gravel. This was followed by filling the individual fields with pebbles, expanded clay, hay, grass, tree slices, wine corks and bark mulch.
Astrid Weixler handed over the SWG donation cheque to Eva Sartorius, headmistress of Homberg primary school, on 20 June. "With the support of Stadtwerke, we can beautify our schoolyard and give the children a great activity to do during the breaks," explains the headmistress.
