Aulweg railway crossing is closed

SWG is using construction work at the Aulweg level crossing as an opportunity to modernise important supply lines. As a result, bus route 14 will have to be rerouted.

On 16 March, Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) will begin replacing pipes that run in the area of the level crossing in Aulweg. SWG is actually taking advantage of the opportunity presented by a DB InfraGO AG construction project. "Our colleagues from the network are renewing ageing district water and natural gas pipes as well as electricity and communication cables in order to reinforce them for future requirements," explains SWG company spokesperson Ulli Boos. In addition to DB InfraGO AG and SWG, a third party is also involved in this project: The city's civil engineering department is having the carriageway and pavement at the junction of Riegelpfad and Aulweg completely renewed.

Construction projects involving so many parties require close coordination and clear scheduling. As a result, SWG only has a relatively short time window for completion. This is because DB InfraGO AG's work on the railway crossing will begin in the 26th calendar week - i.e. mid-June. "We have to be finished by then," adds Ulli Boos.

Effects of the construction work
The laying of supply lines generally involves noticeable disruption to road traffic - usually in the form of road closures. In this specific case, however, this only applies to a limited area: the railway crossing is impassable for vehicles. Pedestrians can use the crossing whenever the construction work allows. However, it will have to be completely closed from 22 June. The Aulweg will remain passable from both sides up to the construction site. This means that residents will be able to access their homes. However, access to individual properties may be temporarily impossible - especially in the immediate vicinity of the railway crossing. Those affected will be informed in these cases. A diversion will be signposted for through traffic. This regulation is expected to apply until the end of August 2026.

Diversion of bus route 14
The construction work will affect bus route 14. Between the stops "Arndtstraße" and "Behördenzentrum", the buses will run in both directions on a diversion via Leihgesterner Weg and Ludwigstraße. For this reason, they will not be able to serve the stops "Welcker Straße", "Ulner Dreieck" and "Liebigschule". Passengers wishing to get on or off at the "Ulner Dreieck" stop can change to the "Sternmark" stop on Schiffenberger Weg and use lines 801 and 802 there. The same applies to the "Liebigschule" stop. For passengers who want to get on and off at the "Welckerstraße" stop, MIT.BUS GmbH is organising an additional service with a minibus that serves the "Welckerstraße" and "Behördenzentrum" stops without intermediate stops. The additional service will run every 30 minutes from Monday to Saturday between 8 am and 6.30 pm. Along the diversion route, route 14 stops at "Leihgesterner Weg", "Riegelpfad" and "Uni Hauptgebäude".
