From 1 August, anyone travelling without a ticket on public transport operated by the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund will have to dig deeper into their pockets. The fine for fare dodgers will rise from 40 to 60 euros.

German transport providers lose around 250 million euros every year because not everyone pays for their ticket. The Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) estimates the damage to the network at around 25 million euros. RMV has therefore decided to raise the so-called increased transport charge from 40 to 60 euros. "Anyone who boards our city bus routes without a ticket will also have to pay the 20 euro higher fine with immediate effect," explains Anne Müller-Kreutz, Head of Local Transport Services at Stadtwerke Gießen.
The 50 per cent increase is intended to act as a deterrent. The aim is to reduce the rate of fare dodgers by around one per cent. To this end, RMV intends to double the number of checks over the course of 2015. The enforcement staff will be supported by the RMV Service Team, which consists of ten employees - a pilot project that is unique in Germany.
