Good street lighting is essential, especially in the darker months of the year: it improves visual performance and reduces the number of accidents. It increases the attractiveness of cities and communities and provides safety. The use of modern lighting technology could save electricity and therefore carbon dioxide every year. More than a third of all German roads are still equipped with outdated, inefficient lighting systems. In smaller municipalities, the electricity costs for street lighting often account for up to 50 per cent of total energy expenditure.
Stadtwerke Gießen AG used the Municipal Environmental Meeting to discuss the latest developments in street lighting. Environmental consultants, heads of building authorities and employees who deal with energy and environmental issues in local authorities accepted the invitation from the Giessen-based energy and water supplier and listened to the specialist presentations on innovations in the field of street lighting.
Michael Rösner (Head of Sales Private and Commercial Customers) and Astrid Weixler (Employee Private and Commercial Customer Sales) welcomed the representatives of the towns and municipalities at the start of the 12th Municipal Environmental Meeting.
Jörg Kupferschlaeger from Philips GmbH then gave a presentation on the transition from sodium vapour lamps to LED street lights. Finally, the participants of the Municipal Environmental Meeting visited the sample luminaires on the SWG premises.
