The number of visitors to the Stadtwerke Gießen AG (SWG) combined heat and power plant on Leihgesterner Weg was surprisingly high yesterday. The municipal utilities attracted a large number of interested visitors to the open day. Reinhard Paul, Technical Director of SWG, was extremely pleased with the public's interest. "I was pleasantly surprised by the number of visitors. I'm really pleased that so many people are interested in the energy production of the municipal utility".
The visitors' day centred on the combined heat and power plant and, of course, the associated district heating supply from SWG. During expert guided tours, the visitors learnt from SWG's district heating experts which systems, from gas turbines and circulation pumps to various boilers, are required to operate a combined heat and power plant. The guests were given detailed information by Matthias Funk, Head of Heat Supply at SWG and Managing Director of Heizkraftwerk Gießen GmbH, and his district heating team.
Another topic on this day was, of course, the planning and commissioning of the thermal residue treatment and energy utilisation plant (TREA). Here, too, the district heating experts were on hand to answer questions.
Advantages of district heating supply
District heating protects the environment - significantly less CO2 is released through the combined production of electricity and heat. District heating is also easy on the wallet of building owners. Customers get their heat delivered to their homes ready for use. There is no need for their own heating system. In addition to the financial savings, this also saves space.
