From 1 January, the levy under the Renewable Energy Sources Act and the combined heat and power surcharge, among other things, will increase. However, nothing will change for electricity customers of Stadtwerke Gießen - they will also benefit from stable prices throughout 2016.

In 2016, the legally regulated share of the electricity price will rise to a new record level. This is because, among other things, the EEG levy will climb from the current 6.17 to 6.35 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) from 1 January. This was announced by the transmission system operators in mid-October. In addition, the so-called CHP surcharge will also increase due to the amendment to the CHP Act. As soon as the Bundestag has passed the new law - probably in the coming weeks - the exact amount will be finalised.
"Although the levies and charges will increase by a total of around 0.5 cents per kWh, we will not pass this increase on to our customers. Stadtwerke Gießen's electricity prices will remain the same after 31 December 2015 as they are today," assures Jens Schmidt, Commercial Director of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG).

Passing on procurement benefits to customers
Jens Schmidt explains the main reason why SWG is able to keep prices stable despite the higher state-regulated share: "While levies and charges are rising, the exchange price for electricity is at a low level. We are now passing these favourable conditions on to our customers by cushioning the higher state-regulated share." The SWG Executive Board member also promises all private customers and small businesses: "We are already guaranteeing these stable electricity prices for the whole of 2016."
