Energy efficiency and climate protection have long been on the agenda at Mittelhessische Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (publisher of the Gießener Allgemeine, Alsfelder Allgemeine and Wetterauer Zeitung newspapers). In co-operation with Matthias Funk (Head of District Heating Supply) and Thomas Wagner (Head of Sales Industrial and Business Customers) from Stadtwerke Gießen, the company has converted its previous heat generation to environmentally friendly district heating. Managing Director Dr Jan Eric Rempel made the decision in favour of district heating. Following the management's decision, SWG's district heating supply staff began planning the changeover.
Willi Schwarz (project manager and SWG district heating supply employee) and Klaus Kunz (environmental officer and responsible for property management) worked hand in hand to complete the switch to district heating quickly, effectively and smoothly for the company. The existing heat generation system was replaced by a modern district heating transfer station with a new control system. The municipal utilities combined individual heating circuits and harmonised them hydraulically. A total of five properties are supplied, from production halls to administrative buildings and business premises.
The heat supply has various connected loads ranging from 100 to 1000 kilowatts and a total annual useful heat requirement of 653 megawatt hours. A comparison of heat consumption before and after the changeover shows that the switch to district heating has paid off. Last year alone, the total savings for the company, adjusted for weather conditions, were 39 per cent. In total, a CO2 saving of 159 tonnes per year was achieved.
Advantages of district heating
District heating stands for environmentally friendly and efficient energy generation. Customers who opt for district heating benefit from a high level of supply security and don't have to worry about a thing. The energy supplier delivers the district heating directly to the house - the compact transfer station saves an enormous amount of space, as boilers and fuel stores are no longer required with district heating.
