The test of the newly installed chlorine system at the Queckborn waterworks has been successful. As a result, Stadtwerke Gießen AG (SWG) has no longer been adding chlorine to the drinking water in Gießen since Friday afternoon. The water supply to the Grünberg districts of Queckborn and Harbach and to the supply area of the Tannenköppel elevated tank of the town of Grünberg is also no longer chlorinated.
Slight chlorine odour still possible for a few days
"However, it is possible that our customers will still notice a slight chlorine odour over the next few days when they turn on the tap. This is due to the fact that it takes a few days for all the chlorinated water in the pipe network to be used up," says Norbert Pausner, Deputy Head of Gas and Water Systems Engineering at SWG.
Background information:
A new chlorination system was installed during the renovation of the Queckborn waterworks. In order to ensure that this system works properly in an emergency (i.e. if the water is contaminated with bacteria or viruses), SWG has been operating the system on a trial basis since Monday 28 August 2006. The water was chlorinated in the entire urban area of Giessen with the exception of the districts of Lützellinden, Allendorf and Rödgen as well as parts of Kleinlinden. Also affected by the chlorination was the water supply to the Grünberg districts of Queckborn and Harbach as well as the supply area of the Tannenköppel elevated tank of the city of Grünberg.
