Due to the carnival parade, Giessen city centre will be partially closed on Sunday, 11 February. Stadtwerke Giessen has set up appropriate diversions.
Giessen. On Sunday, 11 February, the streets of Giessen will once again be a hive of carnival activity: the carnival parade starts at 1.33 pm in Ringallee and winds its way through the city centre with its floats, guards and music corps, which will be cheered on by thousands of people. To ensure that the parade can take place in an orderly fashion, the organisers have already secured the route in advance. This year, the parade will once again pass through part of Ludwigstraße via Bismarckstraße to Südanlage and then on towards Selterstor.
The highlight of the Giessen carnival session requires extensive barriers in the city centre between 10 am and 6 pm. This has a significant impact on regular bus services: the bus stops "Marktplatz", "City Center", "Katharinengasse", "Oswaldsgarten", "Stadttheater", "Johanneskirche", "Selterstor", "Behördenzentrum", "Berliner Platz", "Landgericht", "Liebigstraße", "Nahrungsberg" and "Wolfstraße" cannot be served during this time. Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) has set up diversion routes for the affected lines. "As every year on Shrove Tuesday, we expect delays and ask our passengers for their understanding," explains Anne Müller-Kreutz, Head of Local Transport Services at SWG.
The parade-related changes in detail
While the carnival revellers celebrate, some city bus routes will use alternative routes or take a break.
Line 1
Buses will run from Lützellinden via Allendorf and Kleinlinden to the "Friedrichstraße" stop and on to the "Bahnhof" stop. From Rödgen, the line initially runs as usual from the "Bürgerhaus" stop to the "Volkshalle" stop. From Grünberger Straße, the route continues via Georg-Philipp-Gail Straße into Licher Straße to the "Lutherberg" stop and then on to Eichendorffring and back. Line 1 therefore follows the route of line 2 on this section.
Line 2
The journeys between the "Bahnhof" and "Nahrungsberg" stops will be cancelled. From the "Eichendorffring" stop, the line will initially run as usual to the "Lutherberg" stop and via Georg-Philipp-Gail Staße into Grünberger Straße to the "Volkshalle" stop and then on to Rödgen "Bürgerhaus" and back, thus taking up the route of line 1 in this section.
Line 3
The journeys take place between the stops "Friedhof" and "Bahnhof" and back. The "Mühlstraße" stop in the Westanlage will be served. The cars will also run between the final stop "Schwarzacker" and the stop "Ulner Dreieck" in Aulweg and back.
Lines 5 / 15
The journeys run from the "Steinstraße" stop in Marburger Straße via Nordanlage and Westanlage to the "Bahnhof" stop. The stops "Nordanlage" in Nordanlage and "Mühlstraße" in Westanlage will be served. For the return journeys, the buses will follow the opposite route.
Line 6
The buses on route 6 will remain in the depot on 11 February. There will be no journeys.
Line 7
The line runs between the stops "Ev. Krankenhaus" and "Bahnhof" and back. The "Mühlstraße" stop in the Westanlage will be served. There are no journeys between the "Philosophenwald" stop and the city centre.
Line 12
The buses are not running. The scheduled taxis will run as usual.
Lines 801 and 802
The lines run between the stops in Wettenberg and Weststadt to the "Bahnhof" stop and back. The "Mühlstraße" stop in Westanlage will be served.
Use the favourable group day ticket
Despite the restrictions described above, Giessen's city buses are of course the first choice when it comes to getting to the city centre without stress. And a cheap one at that: The group day ticket for up to five people costs 8.80 euros for the city journey. The ticket is therefore worthwhile for two adults travelling there and back together.
All information on timetable changes is also available at the Giessen Mobility Centre on the market square, by telephone on 0641 708-1400 or online at www.swg-verkehr.de. Opening hours of the Giessen mobility centre in the SWG customer centre: Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6 pm.
